Free vs Paid AI Tiers: What the $20 Plan Adds

Free tier, flat subscription or metered API — the right door depends on how many tokens your work actually moves.

There are three ways in. Free tiers exist for casual trying; the confirmed paid figures are the two flat subscriptions — ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro at $20 per month each for one individual user — and the metered API.

What the $20 plan adds is predictability: one flat charge, no per-call arithmetic, sized for a single person who uses the assistant daily. It does not change the underlying windows — GPT-4o still holds 128,000 tokens and Claude Sonnet 200,000.

The API adds granularity instead. GPT-4o input lists at $2.50 per million tokens and GPT-4o-mini at $0.15; a heavy 100,000-in / 20,000-out call costs $0.45. You pay only for the tokens you move.

Break-even is simple division: $20 ÷ $0.45 ≈ 44 large calls. If your month holds fewer than that, metering is cheaper; if you would make such calls daily, the flat plan wins for one user.

Decide with the five-step procedure on the homepage: measure your largest job in tokens, check it against the windows, price one call, then compare with $20 flat. The context-window comparison page shows how much text each window actually holds.

  • Occasional questions — a free tier is enough to start
  • Daily individual use — the $20/month flat plan
  • Measured, bursty workloads — the metered API
  • Oversized pastes — check the window before the price
